Broken Promises and Faulty Projections

Despite Three Million Private Sector Jobs Lost Since February, Administration Says Trillion-Dollar ‘Stimulus’ ‘Exceeds Our Projections’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement today after the White House issued a report asserting that the Democrats’ trillion-dollar ‘stimulus’ had “exceeded ... projections:”

“It is beyond the pale for this Administration to even suggest that the trillion-dollar ‘stimulus’ has ‘exceeded’ projections when three million private sector jobs have been lost since it became law.

“This is not what the American people were promised.  Earlier this year, the Administration’s top economists stated that passage of the trillion-dollar ‘stimulus’ would ensure the nation’s unemployment rate would not exceed 8 percent.  In fact, the nation’s unemployment rate is now nearing 10 percent, and it is likely to climb into the double digits and remain there for months, maybe years.  No amount of happy talk can paper over this Administration’s broken promises and faulty projections.

“Small businesses are the engine of job creation in America, and to date, Democrats in Washington have only made life harder for entrepreneurs instead of helping them.  Out-of-work families back home struggling to make ends meet are asking one question: ‘Where are the jobs?'  Republicans have offered better solutions to help small businesses create jobs, and I hope Democrats will work with us to get the nation’s economy moving again.”

NOTE: Last week, House Republican leaders sent a letter to the President urging him to consider common-sense GOP solutions to help put Americans back to work.  These proposals, some of which were presented to President Obama as early as his first week in office, were developed by House Republicans' Economic Recovery and Health Care solutions groups.  The Economic Recovery Solutions Group, led by Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA), is also developing additional proposals to spur job creation.
