HENDERSON,NV – Third Congressional District Candidate Dina Titus announced today her plan to create jobs in Southern Nevada. Nevada’s workers have been hit hard by the slowing economy, as unemployment in the region has risen to 6.8 percent.
“Across Southern Nevada, too many people have lost their jobs as a result of the failed Bush-Porter economic policies that have taken our state and our nation in thewrong direction,” Titus said.
“My plan will create jobs in the Third District by investing in a diversified economy built around renewable energy, a workforce with the skills to fill the jobs of a changing economy, and university research targeted at new technologies,” she continued. “By providing incentives to the renewable energy sector and preparing workers for jobs of tomorrow, southern Nevada will be an energy hub that spurs job creation and economic development.”
Specifically, Titus’ plan will create jobs for southern Nevada by:
· Extending the solar investment tax credit and the production tax credit for wind power for 10 years in order to stimulate investment in renewable energy plants that create jobs in the energy industry and supporting sectors. The tax credits will be paid for by repealing tax breaks for oil companies.
· Working with members of Congress from inter mountain states to focus the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on developing new electric transmission corridorsdedicated to renewable power, which will provide work for southern Nevada’s construction industry while beginning a national electrical grid for cleanpower.
· Retooling workforce development programs, especially those focused on the renewable energy sector, at the national and local levels in order to create a skilled workforce that attracts companies and jobs of the 21st century to theregion.
· Expanding grant opportunities for existing and new research and technology programs at UNLV’s Harry Reid Research and Technology Park especially in fields relating to renewable energy.
