Nevada State Assemblyman Ty Cobb announced his candidacy for State Senate District 4, which includes a large portion of his current Assembly district.
He is seeking the seat being vacated by term-limited Senator Randolph Townsend. Cobb issued the following statement:
"It has been an honor and privilege for me to serve the residents of Assembly District 26 for the past two terms. Earning their confidence - and their votes - has allowed me to bring some much-needed fiscal sanity to our state government. I want to continue serving Nevadans as a fierce advocate for the working taxpayer, scrutinizing how our state collects and spends our money.
"Some of the special interests in Carson City like to attack me for fighting tax increases. To me, it is my responsibility as a fiscal steward of Nevada 's taxpayers to demand that government live within its means. It is my obligation to fight against a 100 percent tax hike on job creation during the worst recession in recent history. As a father, it is an imperative for me to call for public education reform when every parent knows that we can do better. And it is my duty to stand up against legislators and lobbyists during this terrible recession, when the y are working hand-in-hand to expand the size of government with a billion-dollar spending increase funded by job-killing tax hikes.
"We need to create private sector jobs. Keep taxes low ... for everybody. Allow Nevadans to keep more of the ir money so the y can reinvest in their small businesses and start hiring again; so the y can start buying goods and services again, creating tax revenue and job growth; so our residents can replenish their kids' education funds or rebuild their retirement accounts; and so new businesses and industries will come here, invest here and create jobs here. And in doing so, create the revenue necessary to fund a limited government.
"I'm a 5th generation Nevadan; my daughter, Lizzie, is our family's 6th generation. I want our state to be the best it can be, now and in the future. We know what economic growth looks like, and we can get back to it again - but only if we resist the special interests in Carson City who push for radical and risky tax schemes, uncontrolled and unaccountable government growth and a rapid invasion and takeover of our personal liberties and freedoms.
"Serving in the Nevada State Senate will undoubtedly give me a stronger voice on behalf of all taxpayers. More importantly, it will give all conservatives, Republicans and Democrats alike, a reliable voice in the Legislature to resist the temptation to grow government beyond its means. Just as we all have cut back our family budgets, the government must learn to do the same.
"I'm very much looking forward to this campaign. I will work harder than ever to gain the support and trust of all the voters, particularly those who are frustrated and believe government has lost touch. As a senator, I will watch over our state's tax revenue as closely as you watch over your own money. After all, in the end, it is the taxpayer's money, not the government's."
