(Carson City) – Today, the Nevada Senate voted to override the Governor’s veto of SB 431, SB 433 and SB 429—the 2009 Revenue Package. This legislation will generate the revenue Nevada needs to protect education in these difficult times. The 2009 Revenue Package adjusts the Modified Business Tax, increases the Local School Support Tax, and modifies certain administrative fees. The Revenue Package is expected to raise approximately $780 million in needed revenue for Nevada over the next two years.
“We must face the facts—Nevada is in a severe economic crisis. Nevada’s families are suffering. And they are expecting us, as their elected officials, to find a path of light through this time of darkness. We have to. This is the job that we have been elected to do. I applaud my colleagues, Republican and Democrat alike, who have demonstrated courage during this difficult process.”
“We have cut over $1 billion from state services—all difficult decisions. We have put some needed programs on hold, so that essential programs could survive. We asked all Nevadans to bear the responsibility of carrying the state through this difficult time. Casinos, corporations, small businesses, and private citizens. My family and your family. We did this so that we were not forced to place the burden of this recession on the backs of our children and their education. Now, the Senate has once again made a difficult decision and voted to override the gubernatorial veto of SB 429, SB 431, and SB 433, thus fulfilling our constitutional duty to balance the budget and our moral responsibility to carry this state through these darks times. This legislation is a bi-partisan agreement that will provide the state with the revenue necessary to protect education until Nevada regains its economic strength.”
