State Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford Commends DETR for commencing program
(LAS VEGAS) – Today, State Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford praised the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) for the release of the Request for Proposal (RFP) related to the Green Jobs Training Program.
"With the release of the RFP yesterday, Nevada has reached a critical milestone on the path toward a new green economy," said Horsford. "I would like to commend DETR for their hard work and dedication to implementing the vision to train hundreds of workers for available jobs in weatherization assistance and energy efficiency, putting people to work while effectively assisting Nevadans in reducing their energy costs."
DETR released the RFP to create regional training programs in southern, northern and rural Nevada. The training collaboratives will train workers how to properly weatherize homes and incorporate energy efficiency strategies that will reduce energy costs for eligible residents and homeowners. Through the training, workers will develop the skills they need to start new careers in the green and renewable energy economy.
In addition to being trained in weatherization and energy efficiency, there is also an entrepreneurial component offered by community colleges throughout Nevada that will help those interested in starting small green businesses to learn about the emerging market, what opportunities are available in this new industry and how they can be involved from its inception.
The training program, administered by DETR, is one of the first iterations of programs created by Senate Bill 152, the Green Jobs Initiative sponsored by Horsford during the 2009 legislative session. As more federal stimulus money becomes available to the state, more training programs and weatherization assistance contracts will be implemented
