Overall, the number of serious crimes in the City of Reno per 1,000 population dropped by about 8 percent in 2007, Reno Police Chief Mike Poehlman said today.
“The FBI Part 1 Uniform Crime Report statistics for 2007 indicate residents of the City of Reno are less likely to be a victim of a crime in 2007, than they were in 2005,” Poehlman said. “We are looking at a decrease in serious crimes from 12,528 reported in 2005 and 12,307 reported in 2006, to 10,951 in 2007. In terms of serious crimes per 1,000 people, this means a change from about 60.6 in 2005 and 57.41 in 2006, to 50.20 in 2007.”
The information reflects statistics gathered for four crime types in the violent crime category that include murder, rape, robbery and assault, and four crime types in the property crime category that include burglary, larceny/theft, vehicle theft and arson. Those crime types are considered the most reliable for crime reporting data, Poehlman points out, because they are most likely to be reported, thus providing the most accurate picture concerning reported crime in a community.
Of particular significance, Poehlman says, is the crime reduction in 2007 of violent crimes in almost all categories. There were 17 murders in 2007 compared to 23 in 2006; and 91 rapes reported in 2007 compared to 100 in 2006, and 110 in 2005. There was also a reduction in robbery with 516 in 2007 compared to 523 in 2006. Assault, which includes domestic violence incidents, was the only category reflecting an increase with 885 reported in 2007, compared to 833 in 2006.
Each of the categories in property crime reflect significant reductions in 2007 over 2006 figures, with the number of reported vehicle thefts dropping from 1,631 in 2006 to 1,072 in 2007; and burglary from 2,105 in 2006 to 1,835 in 2007. Reported larceny/theft incidents also dropped from 7,061 in 2006 to 6,514 in 2007, with arson decreasing from 31 incidents in 2006 to 21 in 2007.
