MAY 2008 Programs HIKES AND PROGRAMS

To provide quality programs we limit the number of participants. Program times vary.  Please call 515-5367 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for times and reservations. If unable to attend a program, your cancellation is appreciated. Parents must accompany children on all programs.

*Please note that the conservation area is a Federal Fee Area & all entry or recreation fees apply. We would like to warmly thank our volunteers for their dedicated contributions to the monthly Red Rock Canyon hikes and programs.

Hikes  

Fri. 2nd, Arnight-Knoll Loop:  How many different cacti grow in Red Rock?  Find several of them along this 3 mile trail with Claire.  We’ll take in the scenic views of Rainbow and Wilson Peaks and see if there is any water in Juniper Creek.  Moderate

Sat. 3rd, Willow Spring to White Rock:  Join Pat for this hike beautiful along the escarpment, imagining you’re walking through a large rock garden.  We’ll look for animals and birds.  Moderate, 4 miles. Sat. 3rd, Wildflowers V-Calico Basin:  Join Bob on this fifth in a series of wildflowers/hike programs in which you can enjoy the scenery and learn about many of the wildflowers at several RRC sites.  We’ll hike the boardwalk and the mail trail from Red Spring.  Easy/moderate, 3 miles.

Sun. 4th, Badger Pass:  Join Carleton and Carol for a hike in Cottonwood Valley on the network of hiking/biking/horseback riding trails there.  We’ll have great views of Mt. Potosi, the gypsum mine and the sandstone escarpment.  Moderate, 3.8 miles.

Tues. 6th, North Peak:  The views are exceptional from the top of this limestone peak behind the north part of the escarpment.  See it all with Chris on this 12 mile hike that has an elevation gain of 3000 feet.  Very strenuous

Tues. 6th,  Birding with the Ranger:  Join Ranger Jim on a fascinating excursion into the world of bird watching while braving the ornithological primeval world of nature, and observe the real life of birds.  Easy, 1 mile. Wed. 7th, Gateway to a View:  The forces of erosion in the area have created a variety of opportunities to see the geology and landscape.  Join Ranger Kathy on this 2.5 mile, easy, informative hike.

Sat. 10th, Pine Creek Loop:  Hike this loop with Pat where you’ll stop at the foundation for pictures, and maybe see some Big Horn Sheep.  Moderate, 3.5 miles.

Sat. 10th, Wildflowers VI-Lost Creek/Willow Spring:  Join Bob for this last in the series of wildflower/hike programs in which you can enjoy the scenery and learn about many of the wildflowers at several RRC sites.  Easy/moderate, 3 miles.

Sun. 11th, First Creek:  Join Carleton and Carol for a hike along First Creek.  We’ll stop at the waterfall, and then make our way up to a pretty stand of Ponderosa Pines for nice views of the canyon and escarpment.  Moderate, 4 miles.

Tues. 13th, Reptile Walk About:  Join Ranger Jim on a fascinating excursion into the world of reptiles while we brave the herpetological primeval world of nature.  Moderate, 2 miles.

Wed. 14th, Moenkopi to Fee Booth:  Join Janis on an early, easy and exciting hike from the Moenkopi to the Fee Booth area and back.  Easy, 1.5-2.5 miles.

Thurs. 22nd, A Quick Tour of Red Rock:  The variety of natural and cultural history at Red Rock is unique to southern Nevada.  If you would like a quick orientation hike to Red Rock, this hike to Lost Creek with Ranger Kathy is for you.  Easy/moderate, 1.5 miles.

Wed. 21st, Lost Creek & Willow Spring:  Join Janis on this wonderful, scenic hike to Lost Creek and Willow Spring where we will see some petroglyphs and the remains of an agave roasting pit.  Easy/moderate, 3 miles. Sat. 24th, Bats of Red Rock:  Join Ranger Jim on a fascinating excursion into the night world of bats.  We will spend the evening at White Rock Springs sitting on the ground waiting for the bats to come for a drink.  Easy to moderate, 1/2 mile.

Sun. 25th, Moenkopi-Calico Loop:  Join Carleton and Carol on a hike that takes you from the Visitor Center to the fee booth and on to the wash in front of the Calico Hills finishing with the Moenkopi trail.  Moderate, 3 miles.

Visitor Center programs :

Fri., Red Rock Up Close:  2,16,23,30 :Take a close look at the flora, fauna or geology of Red Rock and the surrounding Mojave Desert with Carleton and Carol during this presentation at the Visitor Center.  On-going from 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM.  No sign-up required.

Sunday, May 4th:Poetry of the Desert I f you write poetry or would like to please join us. Be inspired by the beauty of Red Rock. Instructor will talk about the creative process. Come ready to write! 1-4 pm
 Thurs. 15th, Canyon Clean Up:  Help keep Red Rock clean by volunteering to come out and help Janis clean up the Canyon.  Easy.

Sat. 10th, Living Legends of the West-Wild Horses & Burros:  Meet and learn about the living legends of the West, and how you can help protect these hardy desert inhabitants.  No sign-up required.  On-going 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Sat. 10th, Astronomy Program-Globular Clusters:  The Las Vegas Astronomical Society will present a special power point presentation and have member telescopes to view objects in our night sky.  Gate will close at 8:30 PM.  No sign up required.

Tues. 13th, and  20th, Tort Talks:  Join Janis for some interesting facts about Nevada’s state reptile, the Desert Tortoise.  On-going from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM.  No sign up required.

Sat. 24th, Features and Fun:  Start your hiking day off with a powerpoint overview of a number of the plant, animal and scenic highlights, and fun-to-do things at Red Rock Canyon.  10:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM.  No sign-up required.

Kid programs

Fri. 2nd, Calling All Coyotes:  Let’s learn about the trickster of the Mojave Desert, “the Coyote”.  Kids will do a hand-on activity, take a small walk and learn about how the cool coyote survives with Missy.  Ages, 2-6, limited space.

Sat. 3rd, Desert Smarts:  Join Missy to learn the basics of desert survival.  With hands-on activities, kids will learn how to be prepared for desert heat during daily life and hiking.  Ages 5-12, limited space.

Sat. 10th, Jr. Naturalists:  Just their size.  Bring your 2-5 year olds out to Red Rock for a fun program about some of Red Rock’s amazing plant life.  Kids will get the chance to see some animals up close, enjoy a short hike, play interactive learning games and complete a craft to take home.  Easy, limited space.

Sat. 17th, Jr. Hikers Club:  Let’s journey through time and take a look at what Red Rock used to be, what it is and what it may become.  Kids will partake in hand-on activities, exploration, interactive games and a fun project to learn about Red Rock Canyon.  Ages 6-12, limited space.  Easy 7/10 mile.

Fri. 23rd, Slitherin’ Snakes:  Join Missy to learn all about snakes.  With hand-on activities, kids will learn about snakes in the Mojave Desert and how amazing they are.  Ages 2-6, limited space.  Easy. Sat. 24th, Simply Spiders:  Join Missy to learn all about spiders.  With hand-on activities, kids will learn about what kind of spiders are in the Mojave Desert and how amazing they are.  Ages 5-12, limited space.

Other programs

Sunday, May 4th:Poetry of the Desert I f you write poetry or would like to please join us. Be inspired by the beauty of Red Rock. Susan Rowe, a local author,  will talk about the creative process. Come ready to write! 1-4 pm Sun. 4th, or 18 Mountain Bike Madness:  No experience is necessary for this introductory mountain bike ride with Jen and John starting from the late Night parking lot.  The 6 miler will be a great way to start new to the sport or dust off an old frame.  Helmets are required.  Ages 10+, limited space.

Tues. 27th, Beginner Art Class:  Ever wanted to try drawing at Red Rock?  This Tuesday, bring yourself and a love for nature as you create a masterpiece worth showing off!  This is a “no pressure” all fun art class with Jen.  No experience necessary and all supplies are included!  Ages 10+, limited space.

Sat. 31st, Beginning Watercolor Class:  Join local artists Shirley and Martha for a beginning watercolor course.  No experience required and all supplies will be provided.  Kids 8 and up are welcome, too!  Limited space.
