MINDEN, Nev.-- Nevada State Parks invites the public to tour the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park, located just west of Minden in Douglas County. Tours include several historic buildings constructed between 1857 and 1916, including the main residence, which was one of the most prominent.
Tours also include information on the history of the Dangberg family and its ranching operations, with displays of artifacts that date from the late 19th century through the 1970s and include furniture, clothing, agricultural tools, carriages and more. Restoration work on the buildings’ electrical systems and exteriors, including wood and masonry repairs and a fresh coat of paint, has just been completed.
The Dangberg Home Ranch was settled by Carson Valley pioneer Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg, Sr., in 1857. By the time of his death in 1904, he created a 20,000-acre empire—one of the Carson Valley's largest ranches—with the Home Ranch at its center.
His children, including H. F. Dangberg Jr., founded the Dangberg Land and Livestock Co.—a collection of cattle and sheep ranches, orchards and other businesses in Douglas County and California’s Alpine County that grew to 48,000 acres by the middle of the 20th century. In 1905, the company founded the town of Minden.
Tours have been expanded to Wednesdays through Sundays at 10:00 am, with a second Sunday tour at 2:00 pm. Please allow two hours for the tour. Advance reservations are required and can be made by calling the park at (775) 783-9417 or emailing dangbergranch@parks.nv.gov. Group sizes are limited to ten people. Tour admission is $3.00 for adults and free for children 12 and under.
The Nevada Division of State Parks plans, develops and maintains a system of parks and recreation areas for the use and enjoyment of more than 2.3 million visitors a year. The division was established in 1963 by the Nevada Legislature to form a new state park agency within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The division manages and maintains 24 parks in Nevada.
