The 2010 installment of the Midsummer Classic will be Major League Baseball's 81st All-Star Game. It will be the third ever played in Anaheim and the first since July 11, 1989, when Bo Jackson of the Kansas City Royals led off the bottom of the first with an estimated 448-foot home run in his first All-Star at bat en route to earning Most Valuable Player honors in the A.L.'s 5-3 victory. The other All-Star Game played at the "Big A" was played on July 11, 1967 and was won by the National League, 2-1, in a 15-inning contest, which remains the longest game - in both innings and time - in All-Star history. The 2010 season will mark the Angels 50th anniversary and the 45th season that the team has played in Angel Stadium.
"On behalf of Major League Baseball, I am pleased to announce that the 2010 All-Star Game will be hosted by the Angels and played in Anaheim," said Selig. "Under the leadership of owner Arte Moreno, the Angels are a model of success. The club has drawn more than three million fans in each of the five seasons he has owned them and has won three West Division Championships. I am confident that the Angels organization, the City of Anaheim and the great fans of Southern California will be outstanding hosts and make the 2010 Midsummer Classic a tremendous success."
"Angels Baseball is proud and excited to be selected as host of the 2010 All-Star Game," said Angels owner Arte Moreno. "I would like to thank Commissioner Bud Selig for this honor and for the opportunity to showcase Angel Stadium and our community to baseball fans across the country. The 2010 Game will coincide with the Angels celebrating our 50th season. I am pleased that our fans, some of the most loyal and passionate in baseball, will have the opportunity to participate in this special event. We are looking forward to working with Major League Baseball, city officials, and other community leaders in presenting a memorable week of All-Star events.
"The City of Anaheim is thrilled to host Major League Baseball's Midsummer Classic in 2010," said Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle. "We have been very pleased to be able to work cooperatively with the Angels and Major League Baseball in bringing the All-Star Game to Orange County. Baseball fans from throughout the world will find Anaheim to be a great place to experience this memorable event."
The 2010 All-Star Game will be played in Anaheim on July 13th.
