OK – look, with all the REALLY important things going on in the U.S., our hemisphere, and for that matter – the entire world – why are so many in the news media hung up on the so called “Letterman Sex Scandal?”

Yes, Dave is a popular late night talk show host / comedian.  Yes, he has made some bone head jokes that caused folks not only to grimace – but demand and receive apologies for – but what comedian hasn’t?  Yes, he is far left of center – but ya know something folks – in this matter it doesn’t…matter that is!

Because of some loon – he had to go on national TV – and admit to having sex with some of his staff members!  OH MY GOD – the horror of it!  Someone in show business actually had sex with somebody on their staff!

GIVE ME A BREAK FOLKS!

Not passing judgment on what Letterman did or didn’t do – but this “confession” should be between Dave and his wife.  And as long as there was no harassment involved – it should stop right there!  It is only because of the mass markets morbid curiosity in the private lives of the rich and famous – that the blackmailer even had a hope of collecting on his demands!

  • How many times do we have to hear about the paparazzi getting their cameras smashed to the ground for being to aggressive?
  • How many times do we have witness the swarms camera flashes following some out for a good time actor or actress – only to see the object of their desire shoved, poked and prodded for just the right shot?
  • How many times do we have to hear about just how dangerous the paparazzi or “entertainment journalists” looking for dirt can be?  Weren’t they blamed for Lady Di’s death?

If the TV viewing public didn’t have this blood lust for what should be a private matter – then I would think that the entertainers and their family’s – would be much safer!

Folks their JUST entertainers – and most of them do a GREAT job of it! Our interest to peek into their personal lives is natural – but should limited to WHAT and IF the individual wishes!

Just as YOU expect privacy in your own home – so do they.  So why do we “forgive” the tabloids for invading their most intimate moments?

Now don’t get me wrong!  There are public figures whose privacy should be  invaded – for example – our politicians should have no expectation of privacy with the exception of their children, the toilet, and their marital bed.  Above and beyond that – it should be “open season.”  After all – the blackmailing of a politician would not ONLY effect him or her – but  can also effect the  constituents he should be serving, or even the entire country depending upon their level in government!

But Entertainers? Athletes? Movie Stars?

We should support stronger privacy laws to protect them from those that are only driven by greed and the story – but also allow for orderly “intrusions” if and when the person in question so desires!  I really don’t know how that can be done – but this is one of things that should be done.

Uncle Mike
