GIVE ME A BREAK FOLKS!
I think Goodman went to easy on President Obama!
It’s really amazing! Our president uses Las Vegas over and over again as an example of a BAD thing – and the mayor of that city get’s criticized for criticizing Obama for doing it…AGAIN!
HUH? Is THAT the mayors JOB? To defend his city against one and all? I could MAYBE understand if this was the first time that President Obama utilized Las Vegas in such a manner – but it isn’t! He knows full well, that we are almost 100% dependent upon tourism for our well being – and any criticism is bad – and one coming from the President of the United States of America – is ESPECIALLY BAD!!
Besides – how could anyone criticize Oscar Goodman – the happiest mayor on earth – for defending a city where the mayor gets to go to official functions with not one but TWO lovely show girls? What other mayor gets to teach a class on mixology at our local community collage? What other city – and what other mayor even comes close to Mayor Goodman? Is it just because Goodman is ornery, or cantankerous, or even mean spirited? How could you be surrounded by those lovely’s’ all the time? Especially when you consider that what he said is TRUE!
His initial reaction to the President?
“That’s outrageous,” Goodman, a Democrat, said to KLAS-TV today. “He owes us an apology. He owes us a retraction. What is a better place, I say, for them to come here. For them to change their mind and go someplace else and to cancel at the suggestion of the president of the United States, that is outrageous.”
And why shouldn’t he be upset? The last time Obama lambasted Vegas – Wells Fargo, Citibank and Goldman Sachs pulled their meetings out of Las Vegas – costing the hotels & resorts – and of course the city – millions of dollars in lost revenue! As a matter of fact – according to Rossi Ralenkotter – the LVCVA president and CEO…
Meetings last year were worth $244 billion. That is a lot of jobs. That is billions of dollars of tax revenue
What exactly is it that we need to do to get Obama to understand? It’s not like he hasn’t been here, it’s not like he didn’t get the royal treatment while he was here – even BEFORE he nailed down the Democratic nomination for president – he was treated like one! The city and her union members gave the Democratic nomination to him here in Nevada – and I’m sure that those very same people gave the state of Nevada to him in the Presidential election!
Now, as you all know – Oscar Goodman used to be a Democrat and is now an Independent gearing up for a rumored run for govenor. I think he is perfectly within his rights as mayor of Las Vegas to say…
I want to assure you when he comes I will do everything I can to give him the boot back to Washington and to visit his failures back there…
A much tougher stance than the last time – when as a good little democrat, he backed way down – and let Reid handle Washington DC. At that time – our Senior Senator & Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid stated on the floor of the senate that…
…he had spoken with Rahm Emanuel about the situation – and the the president was speaking about the executives than he was about Las Vegas.
Wow – now wasn’t that a tough stance? That boy really knows how to stand up for the people of Las Vegas! And What the heck does that mean? He was only talking about the executives? Isn’t it the executives that make the decisions to come here for their companies? Don’t they come here with their wives and/or girlfriends and spend big money? Sadly the issue was soon dropped without further clarification – until earlier this week!
This time – the president offered an apology…almost anyway… saying…
I hope you know that during my Town Hall today, I wasn’t saying anything negative about Las Vegas. I was making the simple point that families use vacation dollars, not college tuition money, to have fun. There is no place better to have fun than Vegas, one of our country’s great destinations. I have always enjoyed my visits, look forward to visiting in a few weeks, and hope folks will visit in record numbers this year.
And our Senior Senator – the very same Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid – reported…
I just spoke to the White House and told them that while the President is correct that people saving for college need to be fiscally responsible, the President needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn’t be spending their money…To truly re-energize our economy, we need people to travel to Las Vegas. I would much rather tourists and business travelers spend their money in Las Vegas than spend it overseas.
That’s better Harry – but our junior Senator John Ensign – said it a bit more forcefully – as in…
Obama slams Las Vegas again. I am calling on the President to apologize for his remark. Las Vegas is suffering through one of the highest unemployment rates in the country and we cannot afford for the President to bring us down any further.
So what is it Barack? Did you lose too much money on the craps tables the last time you were here?
It’s not like we didn’t treat you right – or voting against you. Jesus – even his left hand man – the Senate Majority Leader Harry Read is from the great state of Nevada. So what gives Mr. President?
OH – many of your supporters are saying it was only an analogy – like “don’t put the cart before the horse.” – well, I hate to tell you – but that could be ANY cart and ANY horse. There is only ONE Las Vegas – no offense to Las Vegas New Mexico – but when anyone in the world hear’s the words – LAS VEGAS – they think of this little town in the desert! So WHY must you use our name in your analogies?
And you know something – your democratic friends here in town are worse than you are! They are FROM here – they know damn well what your remarks have done to us in the past, and will surely do to use in the future – and THEY are upset with the mayor?
Well – you won’t get an apology from this writer for Oscar Goodman – he is 100% correct, and you are 100% incorrect. It is YOU that should apologize to him – AND since the great Harry Reid can’t seem to bring home the pork – YOU should do everything you can to help our out of work men & women to get back on their feet! After all your remarks are a contributor to their plight – so you should help resolve the situation – and not just with promises of help – but with REAL, HARD dollars & cents!
Just a thought Mr. President – next time you need to use a cities name BAD example – trying using Chicago, or even Washington DC – or one of them Iraqi, or Afghanistan cities – But lay off Las Vegas will ya!
