The National Park Service has begun work on the 35-mile River Mountains Loop Trail. The budget for this 17.4-mile-segment of the trail is $4,373,490. The work includes paving the 12-foot wide multi-use trail. This segment begins at the trailhead in Boulder City (off US 93 and Pacifica) and will loop around Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) and out of the park at the Lake Mead Parkway entrance (near Lake Las Vegas).

Planning for the River Mountains Loop Trail began in the late 1990s when a group of agencies, community groups, and individuals worked collaboratively on a plan to expand trail opportunities for residents and visitors in Southern Nevada. Their vision was to create a trail that loops around the River Mountains, connecting Lake Mead NRA, Hoover Dam, Boulder City, Henderson and the Las Vegas Valley. That group evolved into the River Mountain Loop Trail Partnership.

This phase of the project is expected to be completed in spring 2008. The funding for this project comes from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act and the Nevada Department of Transportation Highway Enhancement Fund.

“As Southern Nevada continues to grow, places for residents and visitors to recreate and connect to public lands become increasingly important. The Loop Trail will provide opportunities for hikers, runners, cyclists, and equestrians to enjoy this beautiful area in the Mojave Desert,” said Lake Mead NRA Superintendent Bill Dickinson.
