Las Vegas, Nev. - The Springs Preserve (Preserve) commemorates Green Month
promising a November to remember with a series of environmentally friendly
activities and events throughout the month. In addition to learning how to
conserve energy, water and money, visitors can give back to the community on
Saturday, November 10, at the Springs Preserve's inaugural Nature Run by
donating canned-food items to Three Square, an organization working to end
hunger in Southern Nevada. The Preserve presents three special green classes in
addition to its regular schedule of programs to help illustrate conservation and
sustainability this winter season. The special green classes for the month
include "Simply Beautiful," "Winterize Your Home" and "Organic Thanksgiving."
Beginning Friday, November 23, visitors can experience a sparkling LED light
display illuminated through solar power at the Winter Lights Festival at the
Preserve. In addition to offering unique green month activities, the Preserve is
a permanent home to a variety of green exhibits, including The Sustainability
Gallery located in the Preserve's Desert Living Center.
Nature Run
The Preserve and the Las Vegas Running Team present the
inaugural Springs Preserve Nature Run, a Channel 8 Community Pride Event, on
Saturday, November 10. As part of "Channel 8 Community Pride Day," Channel 8
will be giving away earth-friendly tote bags to the first 300 visitors to the
Preserve the day of the run. Individuals who bring five canned-food items to the
Preserve will receive a voucher for an $8 adult admission; donated items go to
Three Square. In addition, SHRED-IT, the professional shredding company, will be
onsite from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to provide free shredding of material bought
by visitors. Findlay Automotive Group will have a hybrid vehicle on display to
demonstrate eco-friendly vehicle alternatives.
Winter Lights Festival at the Springs Preserve
The first Winter Lights
Festival at the Preserve begins Friday, November 23, with festivities continuing
through the end of the year. The dazzling lights display in the Springs Preserve
gardens feature half-a-million LED lights illuminated through solar power, a
leading example of sustainable holiday celebration. The festival includes a full
calendar of live holiday entertainment, original Springs Café holiday-inspired
treats and a wide selection of green gift options. The Winter Lights Festival is
open Friday through Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. starting November 23. It
will be open daily starting December 24 through December 30. Cost of admission
to the gardens is $4 for adults and $2 for children (ages 5-17.) Cost of
admission to the gardens and galleries is $9 for adults and $4.50 for children
(ages 5-17.) Children 4 and under are free. Admission for annual pass holders is
free.
Green Classes
In addition to the sustainability and conservation classes
offered throughout the year, the Preserve presents three special Green Classes,
"Simply Beautiful," "Winterize Your Home" and "Organic Thanksgiving," to help
illustrate green lifestyle choices and conservation tips for the winter season.
"Simply Beautiful" teaches participants about desert landscaping and
water-efficient landscapes. The free class is offered on Tuesday, November 6,
from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Preserve's "Winterize Your Home" class illustrates simple and
cost-effective ways for Las Vegans to weatherize their homes. The free class is
offered on Wednesday, November 14, at 7:00 p.m.
"Organic Thanksgiving," taught by Springs Café by Wolfgang Puck Executive
Chef Peter Sherlock, provides participants ideas and recipes to use for the
holiday season. Some recipes are traditional, while others offer a twist on
standard holiday fare. The "Organic Thanksgiving" class is offered on Thursday,
November 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost of attendance is $12 for
non-members and $10 for members.

The Sustainability Gallery
Within the Preserve's Desert Living Center,
the Sustainability Gallery features 43 exhibits that explore green solutions to
current and future environmental issues. The Sustainability gallery is comprised
of three areas; "Nothing Disappears," explores the topics of waste reduction and
recycling, "Explore the Alternatives" informs visitors of existing resource
conservation and preservation technologies, and "Do More with Less" where the
Sustainable Home exhibit demonstrates resource use and opportunities for
conservation in everyday life.
