Weather conditions over the past two weeks have prompted San Bernardino National Forest officials to lessen fire restrictions, effective Friday, December 7 at midnight.
The change in restrictions once again allows for open campfires and charcoal fires in developed sites and at yellow post sites. Camping stoves and lanterns are also allowed with a valid California campfire permit. In addition, recreational target shooting is again allowed, but only at designated sites on the forest. “Fire restrictions have been effective in reducing the number of human-caused fires over the last few months,” said Deputy Forest Supervisor Max Copenhagen. “I want to thank the public for complying with the restrictions and being careful during our peak fire season.”
The favorable change in weather now provides opportunities to resume pile burning activities on hazardous fuels reduction projects within the forest. Smoke from the burn pile activities may be visible, as burns can be conducted as stand-alone projects or in conjunction with other treatment methods, including mechanical removal of vegetation.
“Firefighters will be monitoring weather and burning conditions closely as they work to reduce fuels by implementing prescribed fire,” said Rocky Opliger, Deputy Fire Management Officer. “This is an ongoing fuels management program that continues to benefit the forest and its users.”
These fuels management activities are conducted under the Healthy Forest Initiative, to increase protection of private property and communities adjacent to Forest Service lands.
