Construction forces partial closures during June
CALIENTE, Nev.-- In order to protect visitors from open trenches and construction equipment at Kershaw-Ryan State Park, some areas will be temporarily closed. A new campground, culinary well and underground sprinkler system are being constructed. The following areas will be temporarily closed from the month of June 2008: group use area/ramada 1, adjacent turf areas, wading pond, playground equipment, horseshoe pits, volleyball court and a portion of the overlook trail.
The group use area/ramada 2, park restrooms, and most of the Overlook Trail will remain open to the public during construction.
Kershaw-Ryan State Park is situated in a colorful, scenic canyon at the northern end of Rainbow Canyon. Steep canyon walls tower to 700 feet and overlook a long, narrow valley. Early settlers in the area cultivated a garden of grape vines, fruit trees and a grass lawn surrounding a spring-fed pond, providing a beautiful contrast to the rugged landscape. A picnic area, children’s wading pool and playground, group use area and trails offer visitors nature study, photography, picnicking and hiking. Kershaw-Ryan State Park is located three miles south of Caliente via U.S. 93 and State Route 317.
The Nevada Division of State Parks plans, develops and maintains a system of parks and recreation areas for the use and enjoyment of more than 2.3 million visitors a year. The division was established in 1963 by the Nevada Legislature to form a new state park agency within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The division manages and maintains 24 parks in Nevada.
