The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services has launched the new 50 & Better discount program to increase participation in recreation, sports and leisure programs by people 50 years of age and older. Current studies show that vigorous exercise for at least 30 minutes daily, managing your weight, good nutrition, sufficient sleep and a positive attitude will optimize good health. Middle-aged residents who do not exercise regularly and are overweight greatly increase the risk of serious health issues, including heart attack, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and arthritis. City sports complexes, community centers, cultural centers and senior centers offer sports, fitness and exercise classes and programs; weight management; nutrition counseling; social groups; educational classes; and dance, music, arts and recreational programs for all ages. Recognize that some physical abilities will decline with age, but giving up sports altogether isn't the answer. People who have been active in sports such as basketball or football should think ahead to activities like hiking, golf, swimming or water polo that put less stress on the joints. City of Las Vegas facilities offer all these activities and many more. And doing these activities with others can increase satisfaction with life.
The 50 & Better discount will be 10 percent off the standard cost at all city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services facilities other than the current senior citizen and active adult centers, unless a 10 percent or larger senior discount already exists. The discount will apply only to persons 50 years or older registering for a program for themselves. The discount must be applied at the time of registration. Photo identification with age verification will be requested upon registration. Discount will not be applicable to online or telephone registrations, due to the inability to verify eligibility.
Discounts will not apply to facility rental programs, retail merchandise, sports league or tournament fees, one-time admission fees/tickets, supplemental fees (i.e., materials, transportation), or in combination with other financial assistance programs. The discount does not apply to activities offered by the Senior Citizen Programs Division, since these already are subsidized by the city of Las Vegas. The city of Las Vegas aquatics program currently offers a 25 to 50 percent discount to seniors, depending on the activity.
