WILLIAMS, Ariz. – November 14, 2007 – The Grand Canyon Railway is introducing a four-day, three-night “Romance-to-the-Rim” package available Jan. 6 – 31, 2008. The romantic getaway features first-class train travel and accommodations at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel and the famed El Tovar hotel on the rim of the Grand Canyon.
Xanterra Parks & Resorts, long-time operator of El Tovar and other hotels in Grand Canyon National Park, began operating the Grand Canyon Railway earlier this year.
Romance-to-the-Rim includes an overnight stay at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams, Ariz., dinner and breakfast at the Railway's Max & Thelma's Restaurant, round-trip first-class train travel from Williams to the Grand Canyon, narrated motorcoach tour of the South Rim with lunch, overnight stay in a standard queen room at the historic El Tovar, a bottle of California sparkling wine and fruit basket in the room and dinner with a bottle of Grand Canyon label wine in the El Tovar Dining Room. After the return trip to Williams, the package includes another night of lodging at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel and dinner and breakfast at Max and Thelma’s Restaurant.
Rates are $390.50 per adult and are based upon double occupancy. Rates do not include taxes. Romance-to-the-Rim is only available by calling 1-800-THE-TRAIN to make reservations.
“Since romance tends to go hand-in-hand with quiet and privacy, this is the perfect time to visit the Grand Canyon in winter,” said Angela Berrigan, vice president of sales and marketing for the Grand Canyon Railway. “Guests enjoy a slower pace, cooler temperatures and distinctive lighting for photographers.”
The Grand Canyon Railway Hotel is a modern facility designed to resemble the historic Fray Marcos Hotel and Williams Depot structures that stand nearby. The hotel is comprised of 288 standard rooms, 10 luxury suites and the Rail Baron’s Suite as well as two spacious meeting rooms available for wedding receptions, seminars and other functions; a large courtyard with barbecue and wet bar; a game room for children; an enclosed crescent-shaped pool (approximately 50 feet long by 20 feet wide) and hot tub and an exercise room.
The Grand Canyon’s El Tovar, one of the original great lodges of the national park system and a key influence in opening the Southwest to tourism, opened in 1905. Described as a cross between a Swiss Chalet and Norway Villa, El Tovar originally had 95 rooms, but a later renovation reduced that number to 78 to allow for private bathrooms in all guest rooms. The front door to El Tovar is a mere 30 yards from the edge of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
First-class passengers on the Grand Canyon Railway enjoy oversized, reclining seats along with extra-large viewing windows along with fresh fruit, pastries, coffee and juice provided during the morning journey and champagne on the way back. Complimentary soft drinks are served throughout in these climate-controlled cars. Grand Canyon Railway has four first-class cars in its fleet.
Grand Canyon Railway operates daily train service between Williams, Ariz., and the Grand Canyon. The Railway offers five distinct classes of service, as well as money-saving packages featuring the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams. Overnight stays at the Grand Canyon also can be included in the packages. Grand Canyon Railway is an authorized concessioner of the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service.
