This years WSOP Main Event Day one is being devided up into 4 "flights" - Thursday, July 3rd was Day 1 A saw 1,297 players at 155 tables took the first shuffle.
The traditional "Shuffle Up and Deal" announcement was made by Mr. Las Vegas himself Wayn Newton, with the UNLV marching band opening the way into the tournament arena blasting away at "Viva Las Vegas."
As with previous years, ESPN has designated two "feature" tables - and this years feture player was none other than Las Vegas's own Scotty Nguyen - the winner of the $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. world championship a few days ago.
A few interesting facts from day one...
- Three married couples played in the sam room today. No word on if they played on the same tables - but they hang in long enough - it's bound to happen.
- Legendary Michel Leibgorin from France was seated. Legally blind, he not only plays with the aid of special lenses which allows him to see his cards - he plays very well - as he as already cashed twice at this year's WSOP.
- Ray Romano equals the feat he accomplished last year - not only playing at the Main Event - but being the only celeberty to survive the first day of play.
The 636 Day 1 A Survivors will be off for the next four days. They will resume play on Day 2 A which begins Tuesday, July 8th at noon.
