BOSSIER CITY, La., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- They're everywhere. The size of only an apple seed, these flat, oval insects that feed on human blood, and live in cracks around beds or furniture have made a comeback. Nearly eradicated since World War II, they're back in droves, infesting homes, hotels, and office buildings in all 50 states. In New York City, reports of bedbug infestations have increased exponentially, and have been reported in the finest hotels, as well as numerous apartment buildings. San Francisco's bedbug infestations have doubled since 2006, with 300 cases reported to the Health Department, primarily in some of the city's best hotels. Aside from the fear, anyone who has been bitten suffers. Not only are the bites painful, in extreme cases, people can have permanent scarring, and experience the psychological stigma of being bitten in the first place.

Joe Orsulak, a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, who served for 24 years, primarily in the Strategic Air Command Reconnaissance Program, and was previously president of a general contracting company, believes that "necessity is definitely the mother of invention."

"My friends and family travel a lot for business and pleasure, and with the recent bedbug outbreak became increasingly concerned that they would be affected," Orsulak said. "My brother, Richard, who is an executive with a global manufacturing company, and his colleague, Joe, and I had a discussion about what we could do to solve the problem. We decided to design a solution by offering the first disposable sheet that bedbugs can't penetrate. Travelers could take them along on trips, and dispose of them when checking out of their room. Our thinking was that if you did have bedbugs in the mattress, and you brought your own sheet home, you would just be helping to perpetuate the problem," he added. "Plus, we were not convinced that any product on the market today offers the protection, as well as preventing bringing home any unwanted guests."

The three friends created a company called Muse International, LLC, based in Orsulak's hometown, Bossier City, Louisiana. The company's first product, "Sleep-Safe(TM) Disposable Travel Bed Sheets and Pillow Cases," is available now on the company's web site. The bed sheets are completely impenetrable to bedbugs, yet have the feel of a soft and durable fabric. The products are hypoallergenic and are made of impenetrable polypropylene with a patented soft fabric-like coating on the sleeping side. The bed sheets measure 60 by 90 inches while the pillowcases are sized to fit standard pillows.

Sleep-Safe(TM) ships in a shrink-wrapped package containing two sheets and two pillowcases that are folded and compressed into a very compact 12 by 7 inch by one inch-thick item. Therefore, an occasional traveler or even the most experienced road warrior can easily carry the protection offered by Sleep-Safe(TM) in a suitcase, overnight bag, purse or briefcase.

The Sleep-Safe(TM) sheets are designed to give the consumer "peace of mind at home or on the road," Orsulak said. Travelers can purchase Sleep-Safe(TM) Disposable Travel Sheets and Pillow Cases at the company's web site, www.buysleepsafe.com. The one-pack retails for $13.95 containing two sheets and two pillow cases, and the five-pack, has 10 sheets and 10 pillow cases for $53.95.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, "Under ideal conditions, adult bed bugs can survive for more than one year between meals. Thus, infested residences should be aggressively managed to eliminate bedbugs."

While landlords and property owners have a legal responsibility to keep their buildings habitable and safe, "The public can't rely on someone else for their own personal protection because the problem is so obviously severe and from all indications appears to be getting worse," Orsulak said. "That's why we wanted to create a value-added solution so people can sleep with peace of mind when they're on the road."

Muse International, LLC, is in the process of creating a wide range of products designed to solve modern problems, with innovative, new solutions. Focusing on the travel industry, Muse International, LLC, is dedicated to helping people feel safe in airports, hotels and other environments away-from- home.
