(RALEIGH, N.C., May 15, 2008) – Harlem Globetrotters Legend Curly Neal, one of only five Globetrotters to ever have his jersey number retired, has received another prestigious honor, as one of eight inductees into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (NCSHOF).
Curly is joined in the 2008 NCSHOF class by the renowned Roy Williams, head coach of the University of North Carolina men’s basketball program, along with retired Duke A.D. Tom Butters, NASCAR team owner Richard Childress, former Duke quarterback Leo Hart, former NFL lineman Ken Huff, coach Jack Jensen, and Hall founder and sports promoter Bill Hensley.
“Outstanding athletic achievement and high standards of professionalism are hallmarks of these inductees. They have brought honor and prestige to themselves, their sports and the state of North Carolina. Their achievements have brightened the sports heritage of our state,” said Wilt Browning, President of the Hall.
The eight inductees were enshrined at the 45th annual induction ceremony in Raleigh.
With 252 members, the NCSHOF was established in 1963 and is housed in the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh, with permanent exhibits featuring sports artifacts and memorabilia.
Sponsored by Campbell Soup Company, the Harlem Globetrotters are celebrating their 82nd consecutive season of touring the world. The Globetrotters have played in 118 countries on six continents, entertaining over 128 million fans and crossing barriers between cultures, societies and people from all walks of life.
