The County Commission kicked off National Finals Rodeo week today by presenting proclamations to local rodeo champions of all ages and recognizing the impact the sport has on the local economy.

“This week is the beginning of the world series of rodeo and it’s only fitting that we thank the folks who are a credit to this sport,” Commissioner Tom Collins said. “We are looking at kids as young as 5 years old who are growing up in Clark County and could be the rodeo champions of tomorrow.”

An estimated 170,000 cowboys and cowgirls will descend on Las Vegas this week for the Wrangler National Final Rodeo competition, in its 22nd year. The event will be at the Thomas & Mack Center from Dec. 6-15 and draws rodeo competitors and fans throughout the country to Las Vegas. According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Bureau, this event contributes more than $49 million a year to the local economy.

Collins recognized dozens of individuals, most of whom are from Clark County, for their outstanding involvement in the rodeo community. The honorees included Little Britches participants who range in age from 5 –18, as well as high school and college teams.

Commissioners presented proclamations to Ashley Andrews, Miss Rodeo America 2007; Jeanette Emma Bye, Miss Rodeo Nevada 2007; Brittany Hughes, Miss Rodeo Nevada Teen 2007; Shyla Marshall, National Little Britches 2007 Rodeo Queen; Oakley Baker-Reymore, National Little Britches 2007 World Champion of the Senior Rodeo Roping Team; Colin McTaggart, 13th place in the world standing Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA); Rick Griffith, UNLV Rodeo Coach; Lori Leas, director of the High School Rodeo Club; and Matt and Missy Reymore, directors of the Little Britches Rodeo.
