Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for May 12-18, 2008. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Soriano led the Majors with seven home runs, 14 RBI, a 1.258 slugging percentage, 16 hits, 10 runs and 39 total bases. The 32-year-old left fielder hit .516 (16-31), including two doubles. On May 13th vs. San Diego, Soriano hit the 45th leadoff home run of his career, which moved him past Brady Anderson for third all-time. The six-time All-Star became only the second leadoff batter in the last 40 years to record consecutive multi-homer games on May 16th-17th vs. Pittsburgh. Alfonso finished the week with six multi-hit games, four multi-RBI games and the pair of multi-homer games. This marks the second time that Soriano has earned N.L. weekly honors, both with the Cubs (previous: 6/24/07), and his sixth overall. He captured A.L. honors four times - three times with the Yankees and once with the Rangers.

Other nominees this past week included Soriano's Cubs teammates Mark DeRosa (.455, 1 HR, 3 RBI) and Ryan Dempster (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 12 SO); Milwaukee's Ryan Braun (.345, 6 HR, 10 RBI); Philadelphia's Jayson Werth (.364, 3 HR, 12 RBI), Ryan Howard (.318, 3 HR, 6 RBI), Jimmy Rollins (.462, 6 2B, 4 RBI) and Cole Hamels (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 6 SO); Houston's Lance Berkman (.481, 4 HR, 8 RBI) and Jose Valverde (4 SV, 0.00 ERA, 5 SO); Cincinnati's Adam Dunn (.895 SLG., 4 HR, 9 RBI), Brandon Phillips (.348, 2 HR, 8 RBI), Bronson Arroyo (0.00 ERA, 7 IP, 5 SO) and Edinson Volquez (2-0, 2.25 ERA, 10 SO); Florida's Dan Uggla (.545, 2 HR, 4 RBI); Atlanta's Chipper Jones (.462, 1 HR, 3 RBI) and Brian McCann (.345, 6 2B, 9 RBI); Troy Glaus (.407, 1 HR, 7 RBI) and Ryan Ludwick (.278, 3 HR, 5 RBI) of the Cardinals; Pittsburgh's Nate McLouth (.267, 3 HR, 7 RBI); Colorado's Clint Barmes (.455, 1 HR, 3 RBI); San Francisco's Ryan Durham (.500, 2 2B, 2 RBI), San Diego's Brian Giles (.481, 4 2B, 2 RBI); Arizona's Randy Johnson (2-0, 3.00 ERA, 9 SO); Russell Martin (.522, 12 H, 3 RBI) of the Dodgers; and Washington's Jason Bergmann (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 9 SO).
