Kansas City Royals outfielder Jose Guillen has been named the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 18th. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect the company's long-standing tradition of recognizing achievements that inspire us all to seize opportunities to perform at our very best.
Last week, Guillen hit .458 (11-24) five doubles, two home runs and 13 RBI. In the week in which he celebrated his 32nd birthday, the outfielder posted a .917 slugging percentage along with a .480 on-base percentage. On May 15th, Guillen went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI against the A.L. Central rival Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium. During a three-game Interleague weekend series at Florida, Guillen went 6-for-12 with a home run and eight RBI, and in yesterday's 9-3 win, he collected an outfield assist, throwing out Dan Uggla at the plate. A native of the Dominican Republic, Guillen is batting .245 on the season with five home runs and 30 RBI. This marks Jose's second career weekly award, having also won on May 9, 2004, when he was a member of the Angels.
