Ron Hornaday Wins Camping World RV Rental 200 to Claim Fifth Victory of the Season and Close Points Gap with Seven Races Remaining in the Season
Win was Second Consecutive Victory and Third Total at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for Three-Time and Defending NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Champion
Loudon, NH – Ron Hornaday, Jr. powered his No. 33 Camping Work Silverado to his second consecutive win of the 2008 season and his fifth so far this year in the Camping World RV Rental 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) . It was also Hornaday’s second consecutive victory at NHMS and his third career in his eighth NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) race at the Loudon, NH track.
Hornaday led for a total of 149 laps of the 200-lap race. In his battle for a second consecutive and fourth total NCTS championship, Hornaday closed the championship points battle to just 74 points behind leader Johnny Benson with seven races remaining on the schedule.
Team Chevy Silverado had a total of four drivers in the top-10 finishing order. Brian Scott, No. 16 Albertsons Silverado finished eighth. Jack Sprague, No. 2 Camping World Silverado was ninth and T.J. Bell, No. 7 Home 4 the Holidays/Heathcliffs Silverado was 10th at the checkered flag.
Matt Crafton, No. 88 Menards/Sylvania Silverado, finished 12th despite receiving substantial damage in a late-race multi-truck accident. He remains third in the standings 168 points behind Hornaday.
Next on the NCTS schedule for Team Chevy Silverado is the September 20, 2008 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
RON HORNADAY, JR, NO. 33 CAMPING WORLD SILVERADO, STARTED 2ND, FINISHED 1st: YOU BROUGHT THE SAME TRUCK AND GOT THE SAME RESULTS HERE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE. RON AN INTERESTING WEEK, BUT YOU CAME RIGHT BACK AND SHOWED THEM THIS TEAM IS ON TOP AND YOU GUYS ARE REALLY PUTTING IT TO THEM. "Kevin and DeLana, Rick Ren and all these guys with the Camping World Chevrolet team have really believed in me. Chevrolet, Mark Smith and Pro Motors and all these guys are just unbelievable. RVS.com. Like you said, long week but I love everybody and this is awesome."
WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT THE BIG PICTURE HERE AND WE'VE GOT TO GO DOWN THE STRETCH AND THERE IS A LOT OF RACES REMAINING BUT YOU'VE GOT TO BE AWFUL HAPPY ABOUT THE MOMENTUM THAT THIS TEAM HAS PUT TOGETHER AND THE EQUIPMENT THAT YOU ARE BRINGING TO THE RACETRACK. "Oh Johnny, he always saves it for the last fifty laps don't he? First and second, but we led the most laps. He was running sixth or seventh again, but he didn't put two tires on this weekend, he drove right up to the front so he's going to be a tough competitor and its going to come right down to Homestead again. I have to thank all of our VFW guys out there again and we appreciate what you guys do and Camping World. And I have to thank my wife; she is behind me one-hundred percent and my crew chief Rick Ren. It’s been a long week but I have to thank everyone that has supported me on this deal."
THROUGH ALL OF THE STRESSES THIS WEEK HOW SWEET IS THE VICTORY? "First of all I've got to thank all of the race fans. They are so unbelievable. The support they've given me this week. Kevin Harvick, Incorporated, NASCAR, everybody, Camping World I've really got to thank them to really believe in me and come out here and give me a truck like this. Rick Ren and all the guys did an awesome job. Same truck we won with last week so hopefully Kevin don't take this one, we definitely need to keep racing this one."
WHAT ABOUT THE RACE TODAY? EARLY ON YOU GUYS WERE UP FRONT THEN YOU FOUND YOURSELF BACK IN THE PACK JUST A LITTLE BIT. "I tell you what, darn Johnny Benson was running sixth, seventh again and I don't know what he does in the last 50 laps but he comes along. It's going to come down to Homestead. We're going to do everything we can to keep running like we are. We're going to try to lead the most laps and win all these races. Awesome at the beginning of the race. Johnny and I were side-by-side for 10 or 15 laps and I got into him one time and he knew why. I got a little loose underneath him and he pinched me a little bit but unbelievable day. I just have to thank the Lord. This is really cool, I appreciate it."
TALK ABOUT THE START OF THE RACE WHEN YOU WERE TRYING TO GET AROUND JOHNNY BENSON: “The first time I got in there, I got loose and got in to Johnny in to the corner there at the beginning of the race. I wasn’t about to do that and loose a little bit of ground. I made sure we got in straight and made sure I didn’t get the back of the truck swinging out. NASCAR has banded us a little bit with our gear-ratio rule; we have to use their gear ratio rule, so I can’t do my real trick restart. I just had to depend on my Chevrolet horsepower to pull in front of them, I guess I don’t know.
TALK ABOUT LEADING THE MOST LAPS TODAY: “That is what we have to do; the great thing about this is we thought about the way we were going to come. Rick Ren came with the exact same setup we had last year in a brand new truck.
“Last year we really dominated the race. This year the No. 09 (Travis Kvapil) was fast. The No. 99 (Erik Darnell) was fast. Johnny Benson was fast. The caution flags played in to our hands. It worked out perfect. When I saw 10 to go, I was still kind of nervous, but when we had that other yellow and there was only four to go, I felt like then I was pretty comfortable.
“I put a lot of rear brake in the truck today and I started to get a lot of vibration on the rear rotors. So I was concerned. So when Rick gets it apart, I guarantee I busted all the rear rotors off that things.”
WERE YOU ABLE TO HOLD OFF KYLE BUSCH FROM MAKING A CHARGE?”At the beginning of the race, I think we were a little better than Kyle. He made a couple of runs; he saved his tires and ran up on us. When he got that penalty, they put him in the back and I didn’t see him all day. I knew he was making a charge there at the end. I was more concerned about Johnny and the way he was coming. He was really strong for the first two laps off a yellow so I had to do something to get ahead of him and Kvapil. Kvapil was really strong on long runs. We are going to have to go home and work on it. We aren’t going to come back next year with the same setup. It won twice, but it ain’t going to win three years in a row. So we are going to go home and do some homework.”
DID YOU SEE ANY OF THE COMMOTION GOING ON ON PIT ROAD AFTER THE RACE? “Good, that keeps them off my back! Good! (LAUGHS) No, I didn’t see anything. You know, I was more excited about seeing the fans and what they were doing and doing burnouts, hopefully they were yelling for me, but I guess they weren’t, oh well. (LAUGHS).”
DO YOU THINK YOU COULD HAVE GOTTEN BY KVAPIL ANYWAY ON THE TRACK? “I don’t think so. Clean air meant everything to my truck the way we set it up today. It definitely would have made it handle different. I have already run in to enough of Jack Roush’s trucks this year, I wasn’t about to run in to another one. I would have settled for second for Travis.”
MATT CRAFTON, NO. 88 MENARDS/SYLVANIA SILVERADO, STARTED 3RD, FINISHED 12th: “We had a good truck and got caught up. Jack (Sprague) driving off his hood pins, what else is there to say? I was slowing down and I thought it was pretty evident everybody was, instead Jack just absolutely drove through me, just hit me a ton. Then he tried to say he didn’t do it but he had my rear bumper stuck in the hood of his truck. I mean he did it to his teammate at Bristol.
“I mean we had a good truck, we made a lot of changes today. For as many changes as we made, all-in-all we had a decent day. We should have had a top-five. But oh well, stuff happens, that has been our last month.”
CHAD MCCUMBEE, NO. 8 MALCOLMSON CONSTRUCTION SILVERADO, STARTED 13TH, FINISHED 11th: “It was a pretty good day for us really. Another finish close to the top-10. That is three in a row-solid finishes so we are making progress. We had to not take a couple of chances there at the end because we would probably have been in one of those crashes. We just have to keep getting better. These guys are working so hard and we are making improvements and gaining a lot of ground. We made some adjustments that really helped me during the race. Actually, we came with a setup that was really pretty good from the get-go. It was a good points day for us. We are trying really hard to get back up in to the top-10 in points. We just have to keep doing what we are doing.”
JACK SPRAGUE, NO. 2 CAMPING WORLD SILVERADO, STARTED 9TH, FINISHED 9th: “Just so disappointing. Ernie (Cope, crew chief) and the guys gave me such a great truck. We were tight on that first run. But, we adjusted in on that first stop and the guys had such an awesome pit stop, they got me out in front of a bunch of other trucks. Then we got the tire penalty and had to go back in the field, from there, track position was everything. It was just tough to make up a lot of ground and everyone was banging off each other. It was one caution right after another and we made contact with another Chevy truck when everyone was checking up. We got a top-10 finish but it wasn’t pretty. It is just a shame; we should have had a much better finish.”
DONNY LIA, NO. 81 NATIONRIDES SILVERADO, STARTED 18TH, FINISHED 29th: "I guess that David (Starr) got into me getting into turn one there and turned us around. We had a really good truck and I need to thank everybody at Randy Moss Motorpsorts and David Dollar and all the guys gave me a great truck. It's a shame. I wish we could have got a good finish for them but sometimes that's the way it goes."
