Starting at approximately 3 p.m. on Friday, August 24, three blocks of Fremont Street to the east of Las Vegas Boulevard will temporarily be closed to vehicle traffic to make way for a ceremonial event to light the new neon signs later in the evening. Fremont Street will remain open to pedestrian traffic.
While the closure is in effect, Carson and Ogden avenues are suggested as alternate routes for through east-west travel.
City of Las Vegas officials plan to light up night as they celebrate completion of the $5.5 million Fremont East District Streetscape Improvement Project.
The public is invited to the lighting and dedication party. The event will kick off with live music at 7 p.m. and the lighting ceremony will start at 7:45 p.m. Festivities will take place on Fremont Street between Las Vegas Boulevard and Seventh Street. Parking is available in several nearby lots including the El Cortez, Fremont Street Experience Garage, Neonopolis and the city of Las Vegas parking structure that is south of Stewart Avenue between Fourth Street and Las Vegas Boulevard.
Fremont Street should reopen to full access by 11 p.m. on Friday.
The Fremont East District Streetscape Improvement Project includes construction of a new Fremont Street featuring three blocks of streetscape between Las Vegas Boulevard and Eighth Street. Neon lighted gateways, neon elements placed in new median islands, decorative signage, expanded sidewalks, landscaping, lighting, banners and bronze medallions embedded in the sidewalks make up this project by the city of Las Vegas Department of Public Works. Las Vegas Paving is the contractor.
