Starting at approximately 9 p.m., Monday, October 8, traffic lane
restrictions can be expected on Sahara Avenue from Hualapai Way to and through
the Fort Apache Road intersection, and on Fort Apache Road at Sahara Avenue. The
lane restrictions will be in effect during the approximate overnight hours of 9
p.m. and 6 a.m. for an improvement project by the city of Las Vegas Department
of Public Works. Some daytime traffic lane restrictions may be necessary as work
progresses.
Based on traffic count data collected in April 2005, upwards
of 71,900 vehicles a day, travel through the Sahara Avenue and Fort Apache Road
intersection. To better accommodate the high volumes of traffic through this
area, the median islands will be removed and reconstructed. Sidewalks, curbs,
gutters, landscaping, irrigation systems and streetlight poles will be relocated
and modifications will be made to some traffic signals. As traffic delays can be
expected while work is underway, Charleston Boulevard and Desert Inn Road are
suggested as alternate routes for east-west travel. Durango Drive and Hualapai
Way are suggested for north-south travel.
Sahara Avenue and Fort Apache
Road should reopen to full around-the-clock access when the project is completed
in mid-February. The contractor is Southern Nevada Paving. Funding for this
$1.76 million improvement project is provided by the Regional Transportation
Commission of Southern Nevada.
