Starting Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, and continuing through the next
three months, Grand Central Parkway will be closed to through traffic from
Bonneville Avenue-Alta Drive north to City Parkway.
Access will be maintained for construction vehicles and nearby businesses,
however, traffic delays can be expected. There should be no impact to travel on
City Parkway and only minimal impact to Alta Drive-Bonneville Avenue near Grand
Central Parkway.
During the construction, Martin L. King Boulevard and Main Street are
suggested as alternate routes for north-south travel. Charleston Boulevard and
Bonanza Road are suggested for east-west access. Discovery Drive, located south
of Bonanza, provides access from Martin L. King Boulevard up to, but not
through, the Grand Central Parkway intersection. Access to Grand Central Parkway
should return in mid-January.
The temporary road closure is necessary as work on a $17.1 million
infrastructure improvement project continues. The construction is part of a
multi-agency, coordinated effort to prepare for several projects in the downtown
area. The ACE Downtown Connector rapid transit project is the first phase in a
Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) project to provide a
high-speed transit connection from downtown Las Vegas to the resort
corridor.
The project is also installing utilities, water, sewer and storm drainage
improvements for the city of Las Vegas’ 61-acre Union Park development. Work is
being completed concurrently with the Downtown Connector project to minimize
future traffic disruptions as the Union Park site develops.
The entire project will take approximately one year to complete. Funding is
provided by the Federal Transit Administration, the RTC and the city of Las
Vegas. The contractor is Capriati Construction. The city of Las Vegas Department
of Public Works is managing the project.
