Many Phoenix area commuters are seeing something new on several freeway message signs. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has launched a year-long pilot program to show estimated travel times on a dozen overhead message boards.
Using data from available freeway traffic flow sensors, ADOT will display estimated travel times on six message boards in the morning peak commute period (6 a.m. to 9 a.m.) and another six message boards during the afternoon peak commute period (3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) on weekdays. The program started Tuesday afternoon (January 22). Estimated travel times will focus on inbound commutes toward downtown Phoenix in the morning and on outbound commutes in the afternoon.
ADOT has worked with the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), the Phoenix area’s metropolitan planning organization, and other agencies, in developing the travel times message program.
“This is another innovation we are testing to help ease your daily commute. We want to help drivers make decisions that reduce their time in congestion,” said Victor Mendez, director of ADOT. “We will continue to look at successful strategies in other regions and our own innovations to provide the information drivers need, whether on the road or from their offices.”
The program is expected to cost about $420,000, including public outreach efforts. The funding was approved by State Transportation Board during its monthly meeting in Casa Grande on January 18.
An evaluation of the travel times message program will include looking at the accuracy of the estimated travel times as well as the effect on freeway speeds, traffic flow and safety. ADOT also will gauge drivers’ opinions of the program.
Travel times might not be displayed if a higher priority message needs to be conveyed to drivers. Those messages include Amber Alerts, roadway closures, safety issues or special events.
Freeway travel time information also is available online at az511.
