The $3.6 million Discovery Drive roadway project in downtown Las Vegas is scheduled to open on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Located north of Alta Drive, the new portion of Discovery Drive starts at Martin L. King Boulevard and extends east under Interstate 15 to connect to Grand Central Parkway.
“Discovery Drive will make downtown even more accessible and its opening is advantageous for area businesses, their customers and employees, and motorists,” said Councilman Lawrence Weekly who represents the ward where the new roadway is located. ”The new road will also provide additional access to the city’s 61-acre Union Park site that is currently under development.”
The Discovery Drive improvement project included construction of the new road with two travel lanes in each direction, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and streetlights. Work started in August 2006. Originally slated for completion in April, the road improvements were completed two months ahead of schedule.
The city of Las Vegas Public Works Department provided project management. Project funding was provided by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada and the city of Las Vegas. The contractor on the project was Tab Contractors Inc.
